How much was each collision?  I don't think fender benders always show up, but major collisions should.

Which brings me to my question of how does Carfax work? Lets say I have an accident, but instead of taking it to a dealer, I have a private shop fix it up. Is the shop required to report the damage done to my vehicle to some authority?

Salvage title for a poorly repaired hood and mis match painted fenders?  :clueless:
A salvage title isn't issued because the owner doesn't maintain their car ie: broken headlight, lack of maintenance.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

The Volvo I was going to buy was indeed a salvage-rebuilt title.  It had front-end damage and was issued a salvage title in New Mexico.  Current owner bought it and brought it to Traverse City, rebuilt it, and applied for-and-received a rebuilt title.  However the guy apparently "rebuilt" it in his backyard.  He most likely used bottom-dollar parts for things like the headlamp - which basically I'd have to replace again anyways - and is obviously not very tech-savvy, thus having nothing but water in the radiator.

I really don't know how Car Fax works, but it definitely catches any title changes - that DMV-related information gets intercepted.  Dealership repairs seem to get intercepted as well - the Car Fax that I pulled on this car showed various repairs by the previous owner, including shocks, a taillight assembly, and brakes.  I would tend to think that any kind of corporate/franchise repair shop that uses a nation-wide database is probably intercepted/farmed as well.  But if you have Billy Bob repair your car in his garage behind his house for a few bucks and a case of Bud, chances are good Carfax won't know about it.

The Volvo dealership who inspected it commended me on spending $100 (inspection and carfax report) to save $4000+ in repairs!

Car was not totalled, and no salvage title. It was a major collision (guy driving a u-haul truck clipped it and the quarter had to be replaced). If it had been even a year old it would probably have been totalled, but being essentially brand new, the insurance company (u-haul insurance) chose to repair it.

My understanding of this, which may be faulty, is that Carfax relies on insurance companies to report this data. If they choose to not report it, for whatever reason, then Carfax doesn't have a record.

I stand corrected. I didn't come close to thinking of a salvage or rebuilt title for this. Just looked like
someone working on a car that had no business doing so. (or not working on it as the case may be).
If I cant fix it, it's broke
