Mine had a single post (FLD) and while I was plugging up the wiring harness I had an extra wire , old schematics shows 2 (FLD) so i took a post the lower right one from another alt and screwed it into the new alt. Hopes it dont fry nuthin but I think it will be just fine.

Square back and round back alternators are the same for hooking up (providing the alternators have the same two lead plugs) and both are externally regulated with the regulator on the firewall.

What you are seeing is the differences in the shape of the installed diodes (alternators need diodes to convert the AC power from the electrical field to DC power
). Round back diodes are in cans Vs square back diodes are open to the air for better cooling.

Only the aftermarket single wire alternator (main power wire only) has a regulator internally and this is attached to the outside of alternator because there is no room on the inside.

the round back Alt use a single field terminal & ground the second terminal up to 69 & they regulate the power into the alt field .
the 70 up round or square back use 2 connectors & regulate the ground instead of the power so if you added a second terminal off the brush from another alt & connect the green wire out ot the regulator to the second terminal it will work correctly .
