oil pump drive
« on: July 08, 2012 - 12:02:26 AM »
put a new 408 stroker motor in and having trouble getting it to run right, it floods off of idle have rejetted and put different metering rods and springs, edelbrock 750 carb, timing set on 34 degrees at 2500 rpm, a friend ask if i timed the oil pump drive gear, i did not,  he said my timing would have a false reading if it was off, could this be correct. it starts good. i have rechecked the timing and it checks ok i  put a new carburetor on and it still floods as soon as it comes off idle and just doesnt run right

If the gear was off a tooth, all you'd have to do is turn the distributor a little farther to get it timed.  You can check the orientation of the gear though.  With the engine at TDC, the slot in the gear should be running front to back.  What harmonic damper are you running?  It's possible that a stock balancer could have slipped, giving you a false timing reading.

Your problem sound fuel related though.  How old is the 750 carb?  I just read a post on Moparts that said the early 750's are junk carbs.  There were lots of problems with the early ones.  They were supposed to have gotten the issues taken care of but a lot of people still don't like the 750's.

What does your fuel system consist of?

checked a couple rocker arms with a dial indicator for movement and looks like i may have some lobes down on the camshaft, not what i wanted to find wrong.

I don't think your oil pump has a drive gear. Maybe he meant your camshaft drive gear which would make sense. The oil pump is (I think) driven off of a hex shaft from the bottom of the distributor to the oil pump & has no bearing on engine timing. I had an old 750 carb that had center hung phenolic floats. Everytime I hit a bump in the road it (carb needle & seat) came unseated & flooded out. I even used a fuel pressure reg. to lower my fuel press down to 3.5-4 psi and it didn't help. Check your float level and needle and seat for trash. I'd also look for vacuum leaks.
