Ok. Did a green cam in the #1 hole (holley reccomendation). Also went with a .035" shooter from the stock .031". Gonna do a stiffer spring from the holley kit tonite and see how it behaves. I'm gonna do the stiffest spring in the kit and then tie it off completely if that doesn't make a difference. Power valve rating is tough to figure. Holley has two recommendations. One is that is it 2" lower than idle vacuum and the other is HALF of idle vacuum. Don't understand why they would say two different things but it would make sense that a 6.5 valve would be way too low for 16" of manifold vacuum.

I've always heard half.

I found this short discussion on it:  http://speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24855
mmmmm.... Mopar.... *drool*

My guess is that it has nothing to do with the carb.

Sounds like flame erosion on the port.

A lot of guys said to use a dollar bill because it's kinda like fabric but stiffer. But if it sucks on the dollar it could rip it in half. So I used one of the wide thermal paper receipts like you get from a restaraunt. Hold it up against the exhaust pipe. It should be pulsed but blown AWAY from the pipe. If it gets pulsed getting sucked INTO the pipe, you have burnt exhaust valves. If you have true dual exhaust you can even isolate the side. Well....lucky me...BOTH sides suck the receipt up into the pipe. Indicates burnt exhaust valves. This is something that several shops missed and rightfully so. It makes the care behave exactly like the carb is starving for fuel or the ignition is breaking up. It was happening right at 2200 rpm under load. Car would bog and fall on its face. Talked to my father in law and it looks like we now have a winter project :-(
Here's a video of an example:

Oh that trick! I lied I have seen that before.. I think it's time for you to run a compression test and see for sure!

We will. Have a lot of time in the car and was assured that the engine was in great working order....oh well. We will get it. No way it got overheated and backfired that many times in its 3000 mile life and not had some kind of problem. Just kinda frustrating that the engine was torn all the way down to the valley pan and headers off for new exhaust manifold gaskets and no idea that it had this issue. Woulda been a quick side job at that point.

While you are at it, check the TDC mark on the balancer for correct location as I suggested, and also be sure the cam was installed properly....and not a tooth off.....

Oh we will. Its pretty clear at this point that we need to tear the engine down and see what we have. I know one of the s
hops had to pull the distributer out and rotate it because it was off several teeth. After hearing the builder what smoking pot upon several of the drop in visits while he was working on the car, we are gona have to go through the whole engine.
