340 heads on a 71 -360
« on: June 23, 2012 - 09:13:20 PM »
so i bought a 71-360 and took the valve covers of and checked the numbers on them. Why would anyone put different heads on a engine? 1st had 3418915 on it and the other was 3671587 J. looked them up and one has a bigger intake valve on it 2.02. One is a 340 TA head the other is a 340 head. But why is there a 360 number on the head? What does the J stand for? Will this make the engine not run right? Should i buy a matching head, can they machine one to match the other. Is a single 340 TA head worth anything? Thanks

Yes the T/A Head is worth a few bucks. How much I don't know. Hope someone will chime in.

probably lost a casting somehow , the 915 head has 360 cast on it was available 2 ways as a regular 340 J casting or could have been a T/A casting but I doubt it is drilled with the offset pushrod holes & offset rockers . the same casting was used for both .

Thanks guys im going to pull them this week to check the intake valve size and go from there. Was looking up the 71 block and the said they only put the 360 in police and trucks . I was still surprised to see they were 340 heads on a 360.

After 40 years of use, abuse, nelglect ,and well intentioned but half baked shade tree mechanics, there is very little that suprises me when I tear apart a car of this vintage

......In 1970 the 915 casting started life as a 2.02 valve [360 cast on a runner] 340 head, used on 1970 and 1971 model cars......A  J head from a 71 360 and 72 will have 1.88 and 1.60 valves........it will still have the 915 casting #...1973 had the #s change to the 587 casting[1.88 intake] whether or not a 340 or 360, also these heads had induction hardened exhaust seats................kim...........
