engine tuner in denver co
« on: July 22, 2012 - 03:48:01 PM »
I have a 408 stroker, 770 holley carb, dougs headers, rhs heads, dl plain intake, crane ign box. The car doesn't run well at all and I cannot get it tuned right. It bogs down and almost stalls when I punch it and is unreliable. Looking for it to run great. No need for a fancy dyno tune. This motor has set me back some $, so I'm light on cash. Any ideas for a good inexpensive shop?

Yeah, your own garage.

We could help you tune it.

First get the timing set correctly, all in about 34 degrees--you can adjust for best power later on.

Then move on to the carb, what jets and power valve is in there right now

The motor was built by ridge reamer and the carb was also rebuilt there to match the engine. I added a tranny cooler, larger almn pan  and a oil filter reloc and still my avg temps are 210*. I'm up for anything, I just want to start enjoying the car.

Or I could fly in .
are you using a clutch fan ?sounds like an air flow problem , is it getting hot in traffic idling or running on the highway ? what cam , how many inches of vacuum at idle in gear ?

34* of initial timing?

No, that would be 34*  total timing at about 3000 rpm. And what vacuum reading
do you have at idle?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

ok. my buddy is helping me out with the timing. what should the initial timing be, 8-12*? also, what is a good vacuum reading at idle? it gets hot in traffic, i have a dual elect fan with shroud. i thought with the oil filter reloc kit adding 2 qt of capacity and getting the filter away from the header along with the tranny cooler and larger pan adding 7 qt's that my temps would drop at least 10*. so far, no drop at all. something is definitely wrong..

I would disconnect the vacuum advance & leave it off set the initial timing at 16 & total timing at 36* total .
Manifold vacuum could be anywhere depending on the cam but the carb needs to be tuned to work with the vacuum at idle in gear .

So, when we timed to the above settings, it ran great until it warmed up. Then it started to perform poorly. We checked the temps of the fuel and it was over 170. I have a 165* thermostat. I'm thinking of changing that out for a 180 and getting some heat socks for the braided line that must be getting heat soaked. Any other ideas?

is the heat crossover blocked in the intake ? A carb spacer / isolater to reduce heat the carb helps as well .
This is some interesting data http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,52284.0.html

It's an eddy 2xplain intake with a wooden carb spacer. So, I'm at a loss. The headers I have are doug's ceramic coated, so the heat should be in check, right?
