Cruised the 73 down to the drag strip tonight for test and tune nights (anything can run, a lawn mower if ya wanted!). Wasn't planning on racing, just gonna cruise the car, but when I got there, I couldn't resist.
Just a 1/8 mile, and no joke 75 percent of what ran were Mustangs (mostly street cars, a handful of drag cars only). Fox body, and the late 90's early 00's versions mostly. The next biggest block was diesel trucks....we like em down here, for work and play
Some of those modded Duramax's run low 9's, then go to the Sonic for a burger, and wake up and haul hay the next day!...one fast powerjoke down there, not many cummins that could compete with the DMax's on the strip though. Anyway, my buddy in his old 12 valve cummins wanted to race, so I said what the heck. Let him watch me do a practice run to see how good it sounded. 340, bored .60 over, auto, bigger cam, hooker headers, peg leg rear end, nothing too wild, just a cruiser. First practice run, got a 10 flat. Lined up with him next time, and left him in the dust!! Ran in the high 9's, both time I raced him!! Around 74 mph. Might not sound like much but I was proud of her...not saying much beating an old 12 valve (by about 3 seconds each time), but I thought it was VERY good for just a few mods to a 340, and in a heavy challenger. Certainly not as much mods as some of those mustangs had which for the most part ran in the 9's, a few 8's. It could've beat some of the stangs, would've lost to some, but I thought hey, for its first runs on the strip, no wild mods I was pleased and it sounded DANG good! Plus, it turned more heads than any other car, even wayyyy faster ones. Even my passenger I had when making the runs said "dude everyone is watching you go down the strip"....The 340 lives, got her first kill under her belt, and I for one was proud of the old gal
Even better, after I drove it to Sonic for a burger, got plenty of compliments, and drove her home....add to that the fact that it wasn't another mustang, and it made for a great evening. Still grasping the fact that a "driver" quality Challenger gets more head turns, wows, and compliments then all of these modern, sometimes faster, shinier and more modded out cars and trucks.
P.S. Even though I'm a dodge man, and my dad owns a cummins, the drag strip leaves me drooling for a duramax every week I go (as far as speed goes...hauling, work, pulling is another story
) Still though
