I'm just in the process of installing a 451" and was in your shoes too. I went with Neils recommendation and bought a new Dana from DrDiff.  Buy the time you build up a 8 3/4 you will be into the same or more than a new Dana. The Strange Dana's are lighter than the original Dana's but do not give up anything in strength. Also you can order/upgrade to a true trac diff and pick your gears. 1350 U joints, bigger tapered wheel bearings, etc... ( that's how I odered mine)
It just made sense to me about the Dana. I suggest you shop around get some quotes and do the math.
I sold my 8 3/4 before I owned 2 of them .... while it was still worth something!
With a new Dana you will know for sure that you put your best foot forward and won't worry about breaking it. With the 8 3/4 I would always be wondering?

ive been doing some reading and i wish i would have done my research before i painted and put new brakes and lines on my 8 3/4.
truthfully a new dana isn't in the cards right now. i'm hopeing i can build my exsisting diff for the current power and then if i do the hemi conversion then i will get the dana. i know that it's wastefull but honestly i might not do the conversion.
i talked with one guy and he was trying to convince me into a detroit locker, ive been in cars with these and i can't stand the clunkin and bangin.  how much hp is a stock clutch style posi good for?

We've talked about this before here.

What I recall being said is that the Dana has a 4 tooth contact gear mesh whereas the 8 3/4 is 3. Then add to the fact that the Dana has a wider Ring gear width than the 8 3/4 ring gear.

8 3/4 on street tires can handle alot thru a manual tranny. Once you go slicks, the Dana becomes more a safety factor against breakage.

Danas weigh more. The rear end weight ratio: front to back on E bodies isn't the greatest.  Yet the Dana takes a little bit away. In the end, the Dana wins over the 8 3/4 once you cross the 500-600 torque numbers.

I stripped the crownwheel and pinion in my 8 3/4 a while back.
It was a spooled 741 case with original 3.55s and abt 400hp going through it in an Abody..
It had done around 250 passes at the time.
Burnouts are cool but Traction is the Action

as long as the tires spin the diff will live , add slicks & traction & it will break sooner or later
I would look at a True track torson style diff over a locker .

Leanburn - you can maybe call me at The Gear Centre and I might be able to help.
I wouldn't worry about the True Trac - its the crown and pinion you need to worry about. I run 620ft lbs on drag radials and hook hard when heated(160 - 60ft times). Have roughly 180 passes and still holding up - 8 3/4 Auburn posi and 4.10 gears.
