My Challenger was repainted in the early 80s also. It had light to moderate oxidation and small surface scratches, I used Meguiare's ultra cut compound (105) and a DA polisher followed up with their cleaner wax. It's not a base/clear shine but pretty good for a 30yr old cheap single stage paint job.

If you can find a Meguiare's or Mother's rep in your area, sometimes they will be willing to use you vehicle for a demo and the you get it done for free. A friend of mine got it done a couple of years ago.

depending on how bad I would use 3m perfect-it II and a wool pad fowllowed by perfect-it black polish and black foam pad and then a blue pad with swirl remover. then wax it.

lacqure is a pain to keep up.

I cringe of even a thought of using wool pad near any car. Wool pads belong in trash

One thing to be cautious of is making sure everything is clean during the buffing process. If abrasive are picked up from the previous step there will be small swirls that require additional effort to remove. Final cleaning of the compounds from nooks and crannies can leave scratches also.  :2cents:

First I would use a clay bar to remove any debris in the paint before doing any type of buffing.  Mother's or Meguiars, it's your choice.
