8 3/4 question
« on: August 22, 2012 - 11:14:10 AM »
The question is about the Thrush blocks, or buttons between the axles. Did the 489,742,741. all have them? And are they all the same? I know that the pre 1964 where diff. But not sure after that..Also with the unit out off the housing, i guess they can fall out? I have seem to have lost one out of a spare 3rd member..Where can you get them? dr diff. moser?

2 types of sure grips , cone & clutch
cone has a floating pin , I remember when I was learning someone warned me the pins would fall out , the cone type the pin is captive & cannot fall out , typically 489 only have cone type sure grips but 40 years have passed & often cones are installed in any carrier , the cone can be identified with 2 spider gears + 2 axle / side gears  .
The clutch type were in the older carriers 741 or 742 , but again things get changed , they have 4 spider gears + 2 axle or side gears . these have a button that is rivited together  , after a few miles the rivit quits & the button will fall out often sticking to the end of the axle & pull out with the axle , the only way to install them is to pull the carrier out or use a 4' magnet & incredible aim LOL .
Mopar used to carry the buttons , Dr Diff would be the first place I would call .

So the clutch type is the only one that used the button? My spare carrier is out, now apart for a gear change. It is a 489 housing with the cone type s.g., So being the cone style it does not take the button?

looking in where the axles slide in you should see a floating pin in there , it cannot fall out .
