Are all 904 trannys the same as far as SB vs. /6?
« on: September 03, 2012 - 07:40:54 PM »
I`m having my 318 pulled out for a stroked 360. My mechanic friend doing the job called me and asked if the tranny was from a /6 I didn`t know the answer to his question but do know my car was a /6 originally. He was wondering since one bolt on the flywheel wouldnt line up plus the torque converter had no weight on it or signs of one ever being there. If it had the weight it would need to go since the 360 is internally balanced. I don`t know if these are clues of it being a /6 904 tranny. I assumed this tranny came with the 318 and neither were original to my car. It`s not a problem as far as my engine swap goes. I am just curious for my own knowledge if all 904`s are created equal.

Totally unrelated question. The flywheel bolt question just made me remember this too. I removed the crank pulley off the 318 awhile back to clean it up and at least 2 bolt holes never lined up nothing was there,  I just put it back the way I found it and never had a problem. Shouldnt all the holes line up and have bolts in them?

No, the cases are different.  The /6 trans has a different bellhousing and the starter is in the wrong possition for a V8.  The internals will probably swap over to a SB case though.

Ok that makes sense thanks Burdar probably a safe bet the 318 engine/tranny were dropped in my car at the same time so neither is original to my car.

I have no clue why but there were different bolt patterns for the crank pullies , often just rotating it it will line up at least 5 in one position
