Engine mount Brackets - 340 to 74 Cuda
« on: November 15, 2012 - 12:10:19 AM »
Does anyone know why my 340/416 stroker engine is slightly lower on the driver's side?  I think it may be the engine mount brackets.  I installed new parts-store-quality mounts (insulators) on both sides. New trans mount as well. I really want to make sure that the brackets bolted between the block and the insulators are the right part.  I'm chasing down a vibration between 3000 and 3500 under hard acceleration, and I need to guarantee that my brackets are right.

When I bolt them to the block, there is a gap about the size of one or two washers, meaning the bracket is wider than the block ears on the driver's side.  I am also getting a lot of movement when I blip the throttle, meaning the driver's side of the block is raising up.

When I know the brackets are right, what mounts (insulators) would you all suggest?  I don't want to feel every vibe as it's a 4 speed car, but it has 530 feet of torque. I want to install a torque strap or equivalent as well without welding or drilling if possible.

Thanks!

sounds like you have a 273/318 left mount , they are different for the 340/360

I think you're right Chryco.  I just ordered a driver's side bracket and a torque strap from Schumacher.  I freaked a little when I read the installation instructions online because I have power steering. They called me back and told me that the instructions online need to be updated, and the assembly they were sending me will work with power steering.

I have read that the 318 bracket is about 1/2" too wide.  Not my experience thugh, the one I have is only aobut 1/4" too wide.  Maybe someone else just squeezed it to try and make it fit.  That freaks me out because I know the ears will break off if you torque them sideways.

Still wondering if the driver's side will be lower with the new bracket.

Your thoughts?

I am not sure exactly what the difference is fo the right side bracket , hopefully everything will sit right with the new bracket
