engine/tranny removal
« on: August 28, 2012 - 03:36:43 PM »
Anyone pull an engine/tranny like this?

I assume they would come out the front after removing steering components that run through the headers, and maybe the steering gear.

Putting it into another good body, and will not be using existing k-frame as it is cracked and bent.

You can pull them both out the top as an assembly or you can drop them out the bottom.   If you are pulling them so you can drop them in another car, then just go out the top.  Unbolt the headers and you won't have to worry about any of the steering parts.

Yeah , I may just remove the headers. I may just get a new set now anyways. These ones were damaged when the shock tower hit them on the passenger side, and 2 tubes were flattened some when the drivers ball joint got ripped off and dropped that side to the ground.

Memo to self: never let son drive car again.

Yours was the yellow car that hit a pole right ?
I would just unbolt the whole K frame& trans lift the body , you have to pull the column & disconnect the suspension , no messing with headers until it is all out on the floor

Had to pull the headers anyways. Couldn't get the engine up high enough for the headers to clear the k-member before I had issues with the distributor/firewall, and tranny/floor hump.

Never thought it was that easy to install an engine/tranny as a unit though from the top. Took about 1/2 hr to drop into the other car and only 6 bolts to secure it. Way nicer than messing with mating the tranny under the car.

Need new headers anyways, these ones ones got pretty dinged up. Brand new ceramic coated too. :banghead:

But, I am sure glad I never entertained the thought of repairing this car.  Cracks in the frame, Shock tower, K-member. Twists and wrinkles everywhere. And that's just the front end. The worse damage is from center back.

Nope. Too bad, because it was a very solid car. I am going to cut sheet metal patches off to sell or use.
