Torque Converter ????

Ok guys need help with torque converters, I have a 383 with Indy heads, cam 284/296 and 507/510, 1.6 rockers, 780 Holley, RPM intake dual plane,  will be running 3.91 gears, 1970 Cuda,

451 tq at 4500 rpm
452hp at 5500 rpm

So my question is what stall do I need to run on the street and not build a lot of heat, will add cooler if needed.

I'd say around 3200

2500-3000
300-3500
and 4200 flash

So you are running this on the street and not doing any Highway driving, right?

I'm thinking 3000 to 3500.   :2cents:

Maybe a few time to get to meets, so what if I went with 3:55 and not the 3:91's

I'd say 2800-3200. Is your max rpm gonna be somewhere near 5500?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Sorry for the thread hijack here but how do I find the stall if I don't have a tach?
After all of the tuning and the parts that I have I am rather certain that I need a higher stall.
When in D, it idles so slow that everything shakes and it nearly dies. We played a lot with the carb and the timing, and its better, but still not quite there.
The cam (we found out when doing the head work) is a Mopar Performance Purple 282/484.
Other upgrades include a RPM manifold and a AED (holley) hp750. ( It is a 1967 440+.030, by the way)
My guy here that helped me do all this work suggests a 2600-2800 stall but admits to not being a transmission specialist.
Does that seem about right?

I wont be racing at all, just the occasional light-to-light runs.

Do yourself a favor and contact the tech line at one of the convertor manufacturers. ATI, TCI, etc. They can give exactly what you need, based on all the available info. Your extensive engine info, and especially dyno info, will allow them to get it right the first time. Also most reputable manufacturers will tweek your convertor if you are not satisfied, for minimal expense.

 :iagree: The folks at TCI seem to be pretty sharp. They treated me well and gave good solid advice. I fried the original torque convertor on my big block stroker motor (543). I was running it on the steet with a 2800 stall, 3:91 gears, 295/50/15 tires. It didn't last long. I have a little bigger motor than you but still a big block with my rev limiter set at 5600 rpm. I ended up with an approx 4000 rpm stall convertor (3800-4000) which works excellent now. When you call the tech line be preparred to give engine specs, tire size, rear end gearing and how you plan on using the vehicle. They will base their answer on what you tell them. Good luck!!

I called Dynamic TC and he built me a TC, stall is about 3800-4000 also, but $$$$
