Please ID this Pig
« on: October 17, 2012 - 07:06:46 PM »
I'm looking to buy this :dunno: (4.10), but I'm not sure about a few things.
1. Is it a Sure Grip?
2. Is the 742 a good case?
3. What do those numbers mean in the 3rd picture?
4. Do these numbers confirm Sure Grip?   5 05 68 C 26354X
5. The ring gear is a Richmond 82-7301-1 J 02 8620
THANKS FOR THE INFO!

Email or call Dr Diff, he's a great guy to talk to and will be able to answer all your questions.

best unt you can buy , 742 carrier with a clutch sure grip . you will need the buttons in the center pin to set you end play . cannot see the #s for the gear ratio in your pix

It's a 4.10, when I turn the yoke, it takes just over 4 turns to get the ring gear around.
What do you mean when you say I will need buttons in the center pin to set end play?

Your passenger side axle should have an adjuster on the bearing / seal flange to set up the end play of your taper bearing assy. The plug CP refers to go in the center of the limited slip between the axles for them to snug up on. You could also swap to the Green style bearing that does not require the button or the adjuster - much nicer to install the axles.  Also just count the crown teeth and the pinion teeth and divide to confirm the ratio. As for the etchings - I am surprised I cannot answer that but perhaps they are referring to pinion depth setting( when using a pinion depth tool) and backlash. Look up into the carrier at the end of the pinion and see if it has the same markings on the bottom - if so than that is the meaning. We never use a depth tool so never really give any thought to these.

if you can see a small hole through the center pin the buttons are missing , you need to install these Before putting the carrier in the axle housing . I think Dr Diff will have the buttons .

BS CUDA,
I understand the axle end play adjuster, I was very confused by that when I worked with it a few years back. I had no idea what the gizmo was for.
Here are the numbers you were talking about...GOOD CALL!

CP,
I was not sure what you meant by ''buttons'' or where they went. They need to fill the hole down here?
So the ends of the axles kind of touch them as I adjust axle end play? I'm glad you mentioned that, I would have NEVER caught it! THANKS ! ! !

Here are the buttons that CP described. I was at the local Chrysler store, so I asked the parts guys to see if they could get me some. They went upstairs and brought down a big fat old book. They enjoyed trying to find it, but no luck. I got hold of Cass aka Dr, Diff and he hooked me up PRONTO :woo:
THANKS for your help Gentlemen!
