Power Steering Testing
« on: November 07, 2012 - 10:39:37 AM »
Got a question on testing out power steering before it is all in the car. Right now I have everything mounted to the K-Frame with the motor sitting on the stand. It is a new Fedral pump and I rebuilt the steering box. I filled the pump with fluid and I am using a drill to spin the pump.

First question is how hard should the pump spin, it really drags a 3/8 drill down. If that is normal I can see where they rob horse power

Next how can I tell if I am getting the correct power assist. Turning the shaft that the steering wheel hooks to with my fingers it doesn't seem to turn any harder or easier when spinning the pump or not.

I assume it is some what working because at first the shaft would turn by itself. After centering the valve assembly it stays put now, by the way it take very little movement of the valve body to adjsut that, very tuchy.

Just alot easier to get this all squared away before it is in the car if possible.

I have never tried that , I would assume the pump would stall a 3/8 drill
