trans vibrating, narrowed down to flywheel
« on: November 13, 2012 - 03:55:12 PM »
Have a new 525 stroker motor.  Put a 5 tremec kit from the Driven Man in it.  Vibarated real bad.  Pulled everything out.  Flywheel wasn't seated all the way and was slighlty mushroomed around the crank.  The crank measures 2.16 and the flywheel hole measures 2.14.  Bought a another new flywheel it measures 2.14.  Carolina motors built the motor and is going to check with the crank builder or distrubtor who sells them.  Does anyone know what the crank diameter is supposed to be?  Also I saw on the forum Chryco likes the Mcloed clutches.  Can't find a listing of anything for a cryhsler on the web site?

Measured 3 flywheels and 1 crank, all were 2.15".

Another thing to watch for is almost every aftermarket flywheel I've had was not chamfered for the needed clearance from the fillet on the crank. j They won't sit flat on the crank like this.

How do you get one to fit then. I just got off the phone with Gray at The Driven Man.  They tell yes the crankshafts on these strokers can vary.  They have had problems with pilot bushings not fitting.  So after 2 years of frustrating with this and over 3 grand now I am finally getting to the bottom of it.  Also couldn't drive the car for 2 years while trying one thing after another.  Stock it's the only way to go, everything matches.  Got a Mcloed clutch package coming and I will have to find someone to machine the hole larger on the flywheel.  Can I tell the machinest to fillet the flywheel?  I take it that means to bevel it.  And how much?

One more thing, I did my measuring with calipers.  Can't really "zero" them for an inside diameter without having a standard.

They had two different kits.  One was $720 the other was $465.  I got the cheaper one.  They said it would be harder to push in but I have a hydraluic clutch and figured that would make it easier.  Would I be better off with a dual disc I think you call it.  I am just not sure what to get, but am real tired of throwing money after money at this thing.

you could do the dual disc street twin but it is $1100 , why not take the flywheel you have to a machine shop & have the center opened up so it will seat properly & have them check the balance for you

They have a dual disc Part # 6913-07 for $725.  They said it would be easier to push on the pedal.  Does it make that much difference?  Also that is what I am going to have to do with the flywheel.  I hope anyone thinking of going to a crate motor or storker cranks will see this thread.  It will save them a lot of frustration.

I know, it's amazing the things that can go wrong that you take for granted, too big, too small, hole not drilled, hole not tapped, not chamfered etc.....

64406B-00-02 is the clutch I used , it is the 130 tooth 1" 23 spline discs with the B&B / Long PP
listed for $1207 but it come with everything , PP , 2 discs , separator plate , new flywheel etc
what you need may vary if you need the 18 spline discs or the 143 tooth flywheel .
If you buy this part do not waste any $$ on the flywheel you have as you do not need it .

Would the flywheel need to be chamfered.  And how much?  Is this the small beveled area (approx 1/8 inch) on the side next to the block?

yes the inside of the center hole need to be chamfered too much is better than not enough , even if you cut a 3/16 chamfer there will be enough of the center hole to center on the crank hub & yes it would be on the block side of the flywheel
