Play in Tail Shaft Bushing
« on: October 26, 2012 - 07:58:44 AM »
I am getting what seems like an awful lot of vertical movement between my slip yoke and my tail shaft bushing when I push up on the drive shaft.  The bushing has been replaced and no difference.  The yoke measures 1.680" dia. on the shiny section.  The amount of play measures around .035".  Is this normal?  Has anyone else seen this?

I'm reading this to mean that either the output shaft (from the transmission) is loose or the slip yoke is loose on the output shaft...

I don't think he's saying the driveshaft is loose compared to the slip yoke.
mmmmm.... Mopar.... *drool*

The play is between the outer diameter of the slip yoke and the mating bushing surface within the tail shaft of the transmission.

No progress lately.  Unfortunately, I do not have another yoke to check.  I did get a chance to check play in another AAR today and there was none in his.  This makes me very suspicious of that area.  Have you checked the play in yours?

My problem is very unique.  I can run it up to 95 and not feel the vibration at all.  But if I push the clutch in (at highway speed) and let it out normally I can usually get the vibration to come back.  Getting it to go away again is hit and miss, but usually requires me to push the clutch in at high speed and let it out very slowly.  I feel the vibration hard on the clutch pedal, as well as in the seats.  I have eliminated several possibilities including clutch assembly, front trans retainer cover, engine, rear end, tires, drive shaft angle (measured and added 2° shims to axle), and probably drive shaft by having it rebalanced (I know, could have balanced it incorrectly).  Through process of elimination I am down to only a few things.  They include transmission (behind the front bearing), universal joints (although mine are new Spicers), and the tail shaft play.

What I can't understand at this point is why I have so much play between my yoke and the new bushing, but that's where I'm focused next.  I just need to find someone who has a spare or at least a measurement so I can compare against mine.

Interesting.  Same dimension as mine.  Could they have offered different yokes or bushing diameters, I wonder?
