NASCAR 2012 - Last Race
« on: November 18, 2012 - 05:59:42 PM »
Jimmy Johnson car is out. #2 Miller Lite car in first place. For those that don't know, it is a Dodge Charger. Assuming that the Charger wins, do you see the irony??  It's the last year that Dodge is in NASCAR.   IF Y'all know more about this, please post. My NASCAR enthusiasm dried up a few years ago when we lost all the high profile drivers.

Dodge just had to have the right driver in the car and they finally did.

Dodge, Penske, Keslowski------All great performers.  Too bad no Dodges will be in next year's Sprint Cup.  They had a great car ready but couldn't make a deal with any deserving owners.

I don't pay nearly as much attention to Nascar as I used to.  The cookie cutter COT was a big turn off.  Glad to see Penske finally win a championship and, of course, nice to see Dodge go out as a champion.  Bet somebody at Dodge is kicking themselves for not offering to extend more years on deal with Penske.

I don't know much about Kesolowski, but he was really funny / honest about 1/2 half after the race when interviewed live on Sportscenter.  He had a big glass of the sponsor's product (Miller beer!) and was chugging it down pretty fast.  Instead of the usual corporate PR scripted responses, he was direct and honest - including saying he already had a good buzz going.  Very easy to believe based on how fast he was sucking down the beer during the interview!

I'm a lifelong NASCAR fan (Cheer for Gordon and Jimmie, just cause I think they're the best 'drivers), and while its certainly not what it used to be in the late 90's, this season has been the best in a while. I went to 4 races this year- both Martinsville races, the All Star Race, and the Bristol night race. One thing that would help NASCAR would be to quit trying to promote it to regions of the country that don't care. It was the fastest growing sport for a while, but that doesn't mean everyone likes it. If it's just a regional sport, thats fine....we in NC, the ones who watch it, like it that way. Another thing that would help them would be if their "most popular driver" Dale Jr, would actually win.  He seems like a nice guy, but he just can't drive. That's like MLB when they have two small teams in the World Series, or the Super Bowl if they have Seattle vs Jacksonville....its not the same. People want to see the big name guys at least competitive.

It was great to see Dodge/Penske/Keselowski win the 2012 Sprint Cup Championship. Too bad Dodge won't be racing in 2013. A little birdy told me they would be back in 2014 with one of the big teams driving thier cars. He said the only reason they are not racing in 2013 is because the Penske group bailed on them and they didn't have enough time to negotiate a new contract with a big established team. They had several offers from some of the smaller, single car teams to run Dodge, but Dodge declined. Not sure how certain my source is, but he is pretty high up in the Mopar performance world. We shall see.....
