PPG FE5 color matching issues ... suggestions?
« on: November 29, 2012 - 12:56:14 PM »
I did a quick search but didn't find anything helpful.

My body guy is trying to match my original 1971 FE5 red still on the package tray and A-pillar.  The package tray lhas a bright full color for comparison.  PPG's FE5 looks orange next to it.  He now has the chip book and I'll need to decide tomorrow.  I heard one suggestion that  the 1996 Viper red could work.  Body guy says it looks pretty close.  I hate to settle for pretty close.  I'm sure others have been down this path.  What have you done?  Do other paint suppliers have a better option?

We already ready tried the computer scan/match and that made the red look cloudy.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

A good paint guy can match the paint to your sample.Either your body guy can do it if he has the mixing system/ correct tints or the guy mixing the paint at the store. If he says he can`t find someone else.

Thanks Jeff.

I just spoke to my body guy and I was wrong - he actually has Dupont paint samples and chip book.

I'd rather not cut a section out of the package tray for the rep to take with him or bring the car 40 miles to their store to custom tint until it's correct.  But we'll see, maybe it's worth it.

I did ask my body guy to get a PPG FE5 sample and chips also.  Hopefully with all of these options we can find the correct color.

I can't fire the body guy since he's a good friend but the jury is still out on the paint rep!    :grinyes:

Paint is tough , my friend had his FE5 custom mixed , I can ask if he has the formula for it . most Plum Crazy paint mixes are too pale , I had to custom mix mine & it was virtually identical to the color behind the brake re-enforcement plate on the fire wall

Awesome CP!  Did your friend match it to his original FE5?  How did it turn out?  Which paint company did he use?  I hate to bother you with this but if I could get the formula it might make this process a lot easier.  I completely understand if doesn't work out.  Thanks a ton!   :2thumbs:

yeah , he built a pink 71 Charger R/T , he saw one go through the dealer when he was young & copied it , it had to be a rare special order car , I believe he used PPG

Pink cars sure are an attention getter and do look really cool but I can't see myself owning one.  If his formula is for pink I'm afraid it won't work.  It's the Rallye Red that I need.   :crying:

For Dupont you should be able to get their chroma color lay over chips. These have an opening in the center of the chip. I have matched FE5 in dupont b4, but I cant find my notes on the variance. Usually with the lay overs its a hair shade light or dark. If you are doing an over all, it will be close enough. I always spray a test sample b4 getting all the paint.
Cant kill the mean and ugly. Only the good die young...I plan to be here a while!!

Thanks Fishin.  My body guy has the layover chips for Dupont.  I'm going to dissect them tonight.  I will have spray outs done also.  It will be a complete repaint.  We'll see what happens.
