replace 3rd member?
« on: December 21, 2012 - 03:43:50 PM »
I need 3.73 gears to match the trans and tires I'm running.  The car will see lots of road course time and be driven on the street. Not interested in drag racing.  I have a good 489 sure grip with 3.23 gears in the rear now.  I am also thinking I should replace with new axles, forged yoke, and true trac.

Should I replace the gears, seals, and bearings in my 489, and get a true trac diff?  Or should I just replace the whole 3rd member with a new one with all this stuff in it already?

Thanks,

Joe

It really depends what you find. If you find a 742 chunk with the gearing you want and everything looks good as far as wear you are 3/4s of the way there. They go in order of strength 741, 489 and then 742. I have a 489 and don't think it will be a problem.

Do you already have a sure grip rear? I would recommend the clutch instead of the cone unit as it's more serviceable.

Funny you mentioned this as I am removing my old chunk and putting in the new sure grip right now.
