1970 Cuda Bizzare Parking Light Problem
« on: January 03, 2013 - 09:03:36 PM »
I am now working on the electrical for my 1970 Cuda.

The problem is that when I turn the key clockwise (not all the way to start the car) the parking lights (not the head lights), the side runner lights and the tail lights come on. However, when the key is in this same position, I can manually turn the fog lights on and off as expected.  :clueless:

With the key in the standard "Off" position, the head lights (High Beams and Low Beams), the parking lights, the side runner lights work as normal. The emergency lights work as all the proper lights flash.

I fear the problem is lurking under the dash as I have installed a new Engine Harness, New Front Light Harness, New Neutral Safety Switch Harness, New Neutral Safety Switch, New Starter, New Starter Relay, New Alternator, New Voltage Regulator and New Ballast Resister. The ground on the front light harness is securely grounded.

I have looked at the wiring diagrams until my eyes have exploded but cant seem to figure out what the problem is.

Any assistance regarding this would be much appreciated. Thank you!

do the dash lights come on also?   Kinda sounds like the relay for the road lamps not working right, or you plugged into the headlight delay or key light some how.

I also have an original 70 cuda ignition switch I can check the wires on to see if they match up to yours :2thumbs: Sounds like something minor

If you plugged into the acc power off the fog lights, it could heat up the running lights, also , the plug in for the ignition switch, if the wires have 1 pin off, this could run power to your light switch to one post. A couple of plug ins like the map light harness will look the same, if you hooked into it, you may be turning on your running lights... Fun isn't it?   Remeber you need the switch panel grounded on the dash via the 1 certain screw.

The dash lights do not come on when I turn the lights on so I will  need to check the bulbs and the circuit. So they also don't turn on when the key is turned to the right as well. I need to get the dash lights working first.

I did found out today that if I disconnect the "Key In Buzzer" the parking lights no longer turn on when the ignition switch is turned to the right. I realize that the "Key In Buzzer" may not be the problem but at least I now know what circuit to be looking at. Both of my door switches (that turn on the dome light) are broken. This may be part of the problem as it looks like they are on the same circuit.

The reason my turn signals did not work is because the "Turn Signal Flasher" was missing. A new flasher took care of that problem.  8)
