help leaky master cylinder
« on: January 06, 2013 - 04:09:52 PM »
hi, i have a 72 barracuda with power front disc braakes.after a drive i check under the hood and brake fluid is dripping from the master cylinder. it is coming down from the cover. i replaced master cylinder cover and gasket and its still leaks, cover seems to be on tight. brake pedal has not felt good since i went through brake system a few years ago. can something be causing to much pressure etc, and causing brake fluid to escape the master cylinderthnx

The master cylinder bar, or whatever you want to call it can be tweaked to stop the leaks.

I have a feeling this has nothing to do with your break pedal not feeling good though.

So, when you went through the brakes a few years ago, did you add power brakes, or disc brakes?

A failing vacuum booster will cause brake pedal issues...just something to think about.

The adjusting rod that comes out of the booster and presses in to the master cylinder may need an adjustment to lengthen or shorten it depending on pedal firmness.

From memory....which isn't always right....if the rod is too long it will cause the brakes to drag as it is applying pressure to the piston on the m/c.  Too short on the rod and the pedal will travel too far before the brakes engage.

If brake fluid can get out, that means other stuff can get in.  It's possible your fluid picked up some water or other contaminates that would cause a spongy feel.  Once you get the leak issue corrected you should consider a fluid swap.

If bending the cover wire doesn't work, do what Dutch said and cut out a second seal just around the edge to give you a double seal around the lip.  The extra thickness will seal it up.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.
