Just 'which' '70 440 do I have here?
« on: January 10, 2013 - 07:24:57 AM »
Hello, all (& Happy New Year)!

While under my '73 Chally doin' some drive-train stuff, I took the opportunity to snap some photos -- of the passenger-side of my big block (seller told me he was advised it was a 440 originally out of a '70 GTX). Below is the pic of the casting # (and is that a '70 date code?) off the passenger-side; and, it wasn't til this morning that I learned while at http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=66 that:

"The block casting numbers for all RB, B, and LA engines are found on the left (driver) side of the block. In addition, on 1968 and later engines the numbers stamped on the lower rail of the engines right (passenger) side match the last 8 digits of the cars vehicle identification number."

At first, I didn't see my block's casting # in the chart at mymopar.com grouped together with the other 1970 440's but then, I spied it higher in the chart, in the '66-'72 group.

Cut & paste from: Mopar Engine Casting Numbers 1959-1978: http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=66

Casting Number   CID   Year   Type   Remarks
2536430   440   1966-72   RB
3698830   440   1973-78   RB
4006530   400   1976-78   B
4006630   440   1978   RB

Question is this: With the info in the below pic, can anyone tell me any more info on the 440 I have?

Or, in other words, based on the info in the pic provided, just which engine's specs should I be referring to, going forward, when I visit this chart, here?: Mopar Engine Specifications 1966-1974: http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=101

Thanks in advance!

What's the VIN number stamped on the oil pan rail on the passenger side ? What are the numbers stamped on the top ID pad next to the driver's side cylinder head ?

These stampings will tell you more then the casting number.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

the block confirms it was cast in late jan 70 , 1-27-70 & should have been in a car within 3-4 months so it should have been in a late build 70 around april or may build . As stated above the stamping along the pan rail will tell a little more .

If you take a pic of the raised area at the front of the block opposite the distributor you will find more info on your block.
