Cap upper control arm, what ball joints
« on: November 22, 2014 - 06:35:27 PM »
Having trouble finding what ball joints the cap control arms use. I know there press in but I'm not sure if there the same part number as the e body or something else.

e-bodies don't press in, they screw in. are you sure that is not what you need? don't know why they wouldn't have used the same ball joints. they are very popular in aftermarket a arms on circle track cars.

They're standard e-body ball joints, and they screw in. I had a ball joint on one of my CAP UCA's loosen up right after I installed them and had my car aligned. I retorqued it and didn't have an issue with it loosening again.

That said, I had a set of CAP upper and lower control arms on my Challenger. I broke a weld on one of the LCA's after nothing but standard street use, which caused the LCA to deform. Fortunately I caught it before it failed completely. Needless to say, I don't run the CAP UCA's anymore either. I do still have a set of CAP strut rods on my car, but only because there's no welded parts on them and CAP wasn't actually making any of the pieces, just assembling them.

Personally, I wouldn't use any parts that CAP welded for anything other than a door stop. A lot of substandard welds left that shop, and I wasn't the only one to have issues with welds breaking. They allegedly even caused a couple of accidents. I wouldn't risk running any of their old UCA's or LCA's on anything.

Cap was a manufacturer of some front end parts Tubular control arms and k frames.  I believe QA1 bought them out and worked on their designs to improve them.

Exactly so. CAP had issues with quality control and at least one welder that didn't know his @$$ from his elbow. The result was probably at least half a dozen instances that I know about of some kind of failure, some of which allegedly caused accidents. That's just what's running around on the internet. Customer service was a bit lacking, and there were some threads on other websites where the owner got in some pretty heated discussions with customers. There was a ton of drama on both sides, and I even was pretty skeptical about one of the failures in particular. But I learned the error of my ways when my own LCA failed.

QA1 bought CAP out a couple years ago, redesigned their products, and re-released them after about a year. The design of the CAP products wasn't bad, but their construction sucked. I wouldn't worry about any of the QA1 parts, I've seen some of the pieces and they were not only well constructed but beefed up pretty significantly as well. The QA1 parts look to be high quality pieces, in accordance to the reputation that QA1 has already established.

The old CAP parts, at least any that were welded together by CAP, should be used only as paperweights or doorstops IMHO.
