trunk lock gaurd
« on: July 22, 2013 - 05:34:29 PM »
Hey all,
I also went to mount the trunk lock gaurd today on my 70 cuda and found that it did not go well either. I can see where the gaurd mounts to the truck support with the two screws but there is literally nothing to mount the outside end to. We put a new trunk in the car several years ago and I am wondering if we forgot something. Any pictures would be appreciated.

The outside end mounts to the taillight bucket.  BTW, 70 guard is different than 71.

tail lights are not in yet. I have a larger problem to solve before I put those in. It appears the trunk lock was punched out years ago. I did not notice it until after 10,000 dollars worth of paint. I cant install tail lights cuz then I wont be able to access trunk to work in there. It makes sense that the guard bolts to tail light though. If anyone has any ideas on the trunk lock I'm open. The trunk lock hole isn't big enough for the lock to slide all the way through but there is daylight aroind the lock and it is sloppy.

What year car are we talking about ? Does it have a late 73 or 74 Cuda tail panel ?
If so get the correct 1974 trunk lock :dunno: They are totally different than every other lock cylinder out there. They are a large circle with one flat side, held on by a large nut.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/MOPAR-TRUNK-CONSOLE-LOCKS-1973-1974-PLYMOUTH-CUDA-NOS-NICE-L-K-1973-1974-MOPAR-/161061552940?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item258004432c&vxp=mtr#ht_39wt_1035

As stated earlier it is a 70 Cuda and it is supposed to have the smaller lock cylinder. I had seen the larger trunk locks and had no idea what they were for. The larger trunk lock, if it is configured correctly to work with the 70 lock rod will solve my problem and I will be forever grateful for the idea, Thank you

The one I pictured is designed to work with a 74 Cuda lock rod. If you can make it fit your hole, it will work with your 70 lock rod.

Once you get whatever lock that will fit in there, you can install an electronic trunk release from any early Mopar and pop the trunk that way. Volare, Aspen, I think, any high dollar Mopar with a electric trunk release will work. They are cheap. It bolts in with 2 bolts - it replaces the manual trunk release. Direct replacement. Still use your key. or push a button. They are all over on ebay. Just run a wire to it, and put in as many switches as you want. Glove box, center console, and emergency switch in case you get abducted and thrown into the trunk, lol. Any Mopar will bolt right up. You just have to run the wire to it. It really is that simple. 2 bolts and a hot wire. I have one in my Challenger, and one in my Coronet. factory. reliabe. STILL use your key, or push a button. Unbolt old unit. Bolt on new unit, and run wire, install switches. Simple, and cheap. Oh - and elegant! lol.
