Finally solved valve train noise, due to T/A engine ignorance
« on: January 24, 2013 - 06:44:25 PM »
Wanted to let everyone know that after 2 months of searching for the source of the problem, the excessive tappet noise in my AAR has been solved.  The problem was that the machine shop who rebuilt the T/A engine a few years ago (the car was not driven much until I got it last year and put 300 miles on it) put in a regular 340 rocker shaft even when using the proper 340 T/A rockers.  It wasn't oiling properly even though they also stuck an extra shim under the shaft to allow more oil to leak and squirt around the valve train.  This was a mess, and the pushrods were damaged by improper oiling.  I ordered a new T&D built 340 T/A rocker shaft and rockers, but theirs won't work either, as the pushrods rub in the openings in the head, as T&D did not built the geometry correct for their offset rockers.  So I finally found a T/A shaft at Yearone, replaced the pushrods, luckily the rockers were OK.  Finally solved, but beware T&D and beware any engine shop, they don't understand T/A engines.
