Low buck rotisserie
« on: January 29, 2013 - 08:28:58 AM »
I would like to purchase a rotisserie so I can do some of my own work to hopefully save some money on the project.    Any suggestions on a low buck, no frills unit ?   I have been looking on ebay and its looks like the cheaper units are around $ 1000.    Any ideas for a homemade unit?    If I could get it on its side it would be good enough for sandblasting.     I am in western Ohio near Dayton,  possibly you have a unit that you would be willing to rent ?    Just sizing up my options.   Thanks and have a good day

If you have a metal shop (Alro) near by you can buy drops for quite cheap. I built mine
for about 350 bucks. No frills and no hydraulics but it works for me. But to build one you
need access to a good welder and bandsaw or chopsaw. Otherwise it will cost quite a bit to have the pieces
cut to size for you.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I researched for a rotisserie for my project and you are correct $1000.00 is the cheapest I found and then you have to pay around $200.00 for shipping. So I decided to build one my self by using different ideas from this forum. I re-searched rotisserie and copied the ideas from several of them. I did make mine hydraulic so it would be eaiser to get the challenger off when I was done.

My materials including nuts and bolts with hydraulics, casters and metal that consisted of 3x3, 2 1/2, and 2 inch tube 3/16 thick and 3 inch dom pipe and 2 1/2 pipe and me doing all the cutting and welding. Material cost was about $650.00 and took me 3 1/2 full days to build. oefully you can find one local that they will let you borrow or rent.

Good luck.

When raising and lowering the hyd ram how do you keep the car level as its coming down? Just go painfully slow? Also can you show where you used each material? Thanks I am in need of building one as well

Yes we lower it slow, also when raising it we do the same. When we reach out height then I measure the distance to make sure the height of the center round pipe is the same.

Metal: 3x3 3/16 for the frame, then 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 for the legs. I made it adjustable and also it will collaspe for easier storage. Then on the middle leg used 2 x 2 11 gauge to connect the two rotisserie together. The caster are 9 inch for me to be able to roll outside in the yard to do the blasting. The mount points are 3x3 3/16 so the 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 will fit inside and is adjustable and is locked off using jam bolts. The hydraulics are harbor freight 3 ton units, also the casters. I had to purchase 20 foot sticks of 3x3, 2 1/2, and 2 inch. Then I needed more 2 1/2 then purchased from Metal Supermarket. I can post more pic's if you need me too. Like I said I looked at all the other rotisserie's and took idea's from all of them.

I built mine for waaay less than $1000. Built from scrap material, it wasn adjustable, E-body only, but that`s all I needed it for anyway.  No rams needed either. I used a common floorjack and a block of wood to lift and lower the car.  I made the parts that fit the body first, then built the actual frame from a bunch of I-beam, and 40mm solid bar. The rotating parts clamps to the bar with a couple bolts ,instead of using a ram. I used a motorcycle sprocket and a couple pins to be able to hang the car in any position. Took less then 2 days to build, with only a big angle grinder and a welder. If you dont fully trust your welding skills, get someone to weld it for you!
