What else to do before Paint?
« on: March 07, 2005 - 07:04:06 PM »
Well my car is ready for primer and after that I will be painting under the car, in the trunk and in the passenger compartment.  However, I am converting the car from and auto to a 4 speed, what all besides welding in the new tunnel should I do before primer and paint so I am not buggering up nice new paint?  How do the pedals, etc attatch, do they wild or bolt in?  I am also putting in the frame connectors, torque boxes and driveshaft loop before primer.  Anything I'm missing?  I hate doing things twice?  Thanks, guys, Tyler

I am in the process of getting my car ready for paint and here is what I have done and up against.
I started out having my car media blasted.  Originally, I wanted to do like you and get all the new metal welded in before I epoxy primed the car.  I soon realized that was a bad idea because to weld the new metal takes time and I had a lot to do.  So, I gave the car a sanding on the bare metal with 80 grit (o give the primer a good base to grip) and primed the car to prevent it from rusting up again.  As I am going through, replacing what needs to be replaced and making the necessary mods, I sand back down to the metal in the areas I am welding.  Once done, I shoot a quick coat of Epoxy primer over my work and move to the next piece.
Before I primed the entire car I was able to weld in a new driver's side floor pan (front and back) and put a new transmission hump in for a Keisler 5 speed.  Before I took the car to the blaster, I had everything trimmed and ready to weld, so this was something easy and quick to do when I got the car back.  So far in addition to the pans and hump, I have replace the drivers side rear frame rail, trunk floors, patched the firewall and wheel wells.  I still have to install torque boxes, frame connectors, patch the tail panel, patch drivers side rear quarter, patch the area below the rear seat on the driver's side, and I am debating on replacing the passenger floor pan or patching it.
Bottom line, is that you need to evaluate how long it is going to take you to do all the metal work you plan to do, then add some time to accommodate what you didn't expect.  Personally, if I wasn't able to work a straight week and get it all done, I would prime the car first and then do your metal work like I have done.  Rust starts quick and quicker in humid areas!
I have decided that when it comes to painting, I will probably paint the underside and inside of the car before I start my actual outside body work.  I have already painted the engine compartment and still have the above tasks to complete.  I don't see any issue with masking these areas off when moving to the next section.
The pedals for a manual bolt in just like the automatic's do.
I don't know if any of this is helpful, but it is what I am doing and you should know this is my first time doing all of this type of work.  Others will probably have better ideas and experience.

You need the bracket for the clutch pivot rod welded to the drivers frame rail.

Torredcuda, can you explain this a little more???  Sorry but I don't actually have all the 4 speed parts yet so I'm not familiar with them all. Basically thats why I'm asking this question now though, what should I buy and weld on before paint.  And where abouts on the frame rail does it go???  Thanks, Tyler

Hi 2000gt,
What torred is talking about won't be necessary if you're going with
the Keisler set-up and use their hydro clutch release bearing which would
be much easier on a auto to manual conversion. The bracket Torred is talking
about supports the outside end of the "z-bar" clutch linkage with the inside supported
by the bellhousing in an OEM install.  It would only be required if you intend to use the
mechnical clutch release set-up. A lot of guys that have cars the came with manual trans
are switching to the hydro clutch release because it opens things up a bit for headers etc.
Hope this helps. Goodluck!!   Jeff

Thanks, so you can use this hydro clutch release bearing with a 833???  Do you have the part number on that?  Thanks, Tyler

Hi,
Keisler has it on their website keislerauto.com. It is basically a small master cylinder and
it releases the clutch via fluid, like a little brake system instead of a mechnical connection
all the way from the clutch pedal to the release bearing. If you have all the other 4 speed
stuff including the linkage, then this bracket your missing that gets welded to the frame
is pretty simple and can be fabed up. I can take a picture of mine and post it tomorrow unless
someone else can get it up here quicker. Yes, it should work with the 833 and if you don't
have the linkage it might be a easier alternative to go with the hydrolic(sp) set-up. Jeff

If your car is a console car, you will need to weld console mounting brackets on the 4 spd hump.
The reproduction humps do not have these brackets on them and all the used humps I have seen on ebay have the brackets removed.
If not a console car, then you dont have to do this.
A rusted hump with no brackets just sold on ebay for like 200 dollars. You can get new repos for 119. whats up with that?

Also, if you are doing frame connectors, if using 2x2 inch tubing, you may want to run them inside the floors.
As the frame connector goes toward the rear of the car, it will enter the car thru the floors partially so that it can to into the rear frame rail flush.
So you will be cutting long 2 inch wide slots in your floors, then weld the floors to the frame connectors.
