Help! AC heater motor in non AC car :-(
« on: February 08, 2013 - 12:44:34 PM »
Let me explain.
I have a cuda clone 440-6 pack. Originally 318 with AC. No AC was available on 440-6 cars so I have no AC in the car. However, I have the AC heater motor which is bigger then the non-AC heater motor. I don't want to have my firewall redone for a smaller hole which would be correct for the smaller heater motor. But I've been told that I won't be able to hook up my larger AC heater motor to my wiring harness I just got (https://www.yearone.com/Product/1966-74-a-b-e-body/hu291e) from year one.
Can anyone help me on this please?

I don't understand the problem. Is the connector different? If so, can't you just put a different end on the harness or the blower motor?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Do you have wiring diagrams?  I'm looking at the stock no-AC diagram and the AC system diagram for a '70 and it looks like the difference for the blower motors is that the AC system has two dark green wires on the plug that goes into the heater box for the resistors.  One of those green wires goes back to one of the small bulkhead connectors, out to the engine compartment, and is plugged into the blower motor.   I'm guessing that your heater/AC box in the car has a 3-prong plug (under the glove box) and the new harness has a two prong plug.  This is doable, but you'll need a wiring diagram or two.

Here are the diagrams I'm looking at.  The first one is the non-AC, the second is the AC, both for a '70.  Are you still using the AC control on the left side of the dash?

Thanks for the diagrams. Yes, I still have the AC control on the left side of the dash.
Will the heat work even if I have an AC box (vacuum and stuff)?

The heater will definitely work. Our 70 Challenger was originally AC but not anymore, and the heat and defrost work fine, (but all the wiring under the dash is the original).  Do you still have the original engine compartment harness with a dark green wire that goes along the firewall and plugs into the blower? Is the wiring over to the heater box original AC (w/ a 3-wire plug) or is it part of the Year One harness (no AC and a 2-wire plug)?
