another wiper problem
« on: February 28, 2013 - 10:54:34 PM »
i finally got my motor to work, it works just like it should but when i hook my linkage up and i turn on the wipers they try to go down first.
i can't figure out what ive got backwards but when the arm extends to park the wipers they go up and when it retracts they go down. im sure when i find out what is wrong it's going to be embarrassing.

Is the arm that goes on the motor 180 degrees off? I don't know if you have the arms on the windshield but I always put a piece of masking tape on instead of the wipers so I dont destroy the body or the motor if they go the wrong way.

Arm only goes on one way. When it parks it is pointing towards the passenger side wich I believe is correct?

Here's the story. Just finishing a full resto, I used a wiring kit from American autowire. I had some issues getting the motor to work at all ( no power ) and I traced it back to the bulkhead fitting. Everything works now. The motor is from a buddy and the arm is from my original motor.
One question, when the wipers park is the arm suppose to extend? Mine extends and this motion make the wipers go up. So in other words once my wipers stop they go up a bunch and then when I turn them on the arm retracts before it spins and the wipers go down

so are you saying that when you turn the wipers off they first go up and then they park? Do you have a 2 speed or 3 speed wiper motor? How many wires on your wiper plug? Is the wiring kit a painless wiring kit or like oem wiring harness?

I've taken apart a variable speed switch so I know a little about what's going on inside one of  those, but the two speed switch is probably the same idea. When you turn the switch to the "off" position, some brass contacts in the switch crisscross to reverse the current.  The wiper motor gear box then parks the wipers, and a little switch on the front of  the wiper motor gear box is contacted to stop the motor.  I'm guessing that two wires on the 4-wire bulkhead plug are reversed.  I remember having to reverse two wires when we went from a 72-74 style to a '70 style motor.  Maybe someone with a same vintage wiper setup can tell you the positions of the four colored wires in the bulkhead plug.

I played around with them again tonight. It seems as if the linkage is the problem, when the motor parks is the arm suppose to extend?

I shined a flashlight through the cowl screen to look at the back of the wiper motor.  When it is "parked" the arm is pointing straight at the VIN plate on the dash.  I pulled out a working motor from my parts box and the arm on that one is pointing the same way.  As you probably know, the shaft that the arm attaches to is on an eccentric (which does the parking).  That shaft, as you can see in the picture, is rotated over in the same direction as the arm is extending.  Hope this helps.  BTW, be sure both the switch and the motor are grounded well if you're testing them out of position.  Otherwise, the motor won't act normally (like reverse to park).
