Just recently I noticed a strange tapping sound coming from around the valve cover area, pulled the cover off and quickly realised some of the rockers can be wiggled back and forth in a front of the car to back of the car motion. Is this resolved by re-adjusting the valve lash, or is their more to it then that?

You don't have any adjustment with the stock set-up. The movement is probably because that valve is closed, with no real pressure on the spring and the lifter has bleed off a little pressure. The rocker that won't slide probably has the valve opened a bit and has more pressure on it. If you heard ticking with the engine running, might just be a lifter not building up pressure completly. Could be time for an oil change or a bad lifter

That is normal, but you might have some wear on the bottom of the shafts. Might be
worth removing the shafts and checking it out just to be safe.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

you may have a bent pushrod too .
obviously you have adjustable rockers , there should be spacers or springs to prevent the rocker sliding along the shaft , adjusting lash will have no effect on lateral movement

I don't think the stamped steel rockers are the way to go!
Too much slop?

That's excellent news that the rockers move like that. I will eventually change the heads and replace the old style rockers with some new ones. But honestly all my car budget is going towards getting the car registered for the time being. Chryco, i'll look into bent pushrods in a week, last night one of my heater hoses ruptured and all the of the  internals are drenched in antifreeze.

So while trying to further diagnose the tapping sound I discovered the sound stopped when I pushed the clutch in and came back when I let it back out. Basically when I lowered my head into the engine bay the sound got louder. I was actually hearing the sounds from the clutch transmission area (rookie mistake on my behalf). Jacked the car up, started it, got underneath pulled of the clutch shield plate and the noise got a little bit louder, gradually pressed in and pulled out the clutch peddle a couple of times, the tapping suddenly turned into clunking.

I've started a new thread in the drive train section, here is a link to it. http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=91832.0

Thanks for the help so far, even though the sound is coming from the transmission/clutch area I'm still going to inspect all the of the push rods, just after I service the transmission!

Sounds like you need a throw out bearing or a pilot bearing. Word to the wise, if your going to change the throw out bearing you might want to put a new bushing in the crank/ pilot bushing.
Its just a little 340 with a miss
