Rear disc brake conversion question
« on: February 28, 2013 - 07:13:03 PM »
I'd like to convert my rear drums to disc. I have an 8 3/4 axle from a 1974 Barracuda and when I search for kits they list e-body kits up 1972. Is there any reason why it won't fit my 1974 axle?

I'm no expert but I can't see why they stop at 1972? They are all the same as far as I know?
Did you look into the kits from DrDiff? ( Cass) That's where I got mine from. Works great and installed easy.

the 8 3/4" diff was dropped in virtually all applications in 72 , only the E body continued to 74 so that may be the reason for the cutoff as 72 , either way the flange is the same , it is a simple 5 bolt flange , unbolt the 5 bolt flange slide out the axle , , disconnect the brake line & remove the brake backing plate , the disc system will bolt onto the same flange .

You are right Chryco, the companies I looked at that list a part number, list the same number for all the years. I didn't know Mopar stopped using the 8 3/4 axle for all their cars except the e-body after 1972. Thanks for the info.

none of the kits I looked at come with a new master cylinder but since I have disc brakes in the front now I'm thinking I don't need one.

if you are adding rear disc there is a residual pressure valve behind the brass insert the flared line seals against in the master , you can use a threaded screw like a drywall screw to grab the insert & pull it out , remove the rubber RPV & insert the brass insert again ,
