Driveshaft Needed '70 AAR Cuda
« on: March 13, 2013 - 08:37:20 PM »
I need to either get a new driveshaft for my Cuda or have the current one re-shafted.  Any recommendations on where the best (affordable) place to go is for a new one?  Am I better off having my current one repaired if the ends are good or is is just as cheap to buy a whole new one?  If I repair, any recommendations on who does a good job?  Thanks in advance.

I would just find a local shop and ask for better u joints. It would be expensive to buy and have one shipped

As I recall you had a vibration problem , so it would make sense to eliminate the shaft altogether & have a new one built

That is correct, Neil.  You have a good memory.  It's the vibration I am trying to (once and for all) get rid of.  When I run the car in 1st gear with the rear end jacked up I can see run out in the shaft.  I haven't measured it yet but am assuming that if I can see it moving then it may be too much, and the source of my problem.  Thanks.

So most people have them made locally instead of having a new one shipped, it sounds like?  I'll look into that.  Thanks.

Yep, that's what I did decades ago and never looked back.

I got mine from Mancini, when I checked locally it would have actually cost more.

When I got my 72 Cuda 440-6 it had the small drive shaft and U joints. I bought a full size used drive shaft with the big U joints and front yoke $90. Then had it shortened balanced and straightened and brute force bearings for about $125 at a local shop. I then picked up the big 8 3/4 Diff yoke to finish the job. Now I have a heavy duty drive shaft so it will not break again. So if you are going to redo it make it the big U joints.
