Hey everyone,
Could someone please tell me how I visually identify the model and size (cfm) of the Edelbrock 4bbl carb on my 440 Challenger.

I also need to get some info on tuning this sucker.  It seems to starve fuel or something. And its getting worse not better.  I have the idle up to 1000rpm just to get it to go when I put it into drive....otherwise it just chokes and quits....then you drive at say 35mph...just fine then accelerate and she coughs and splutters then catches and off she goes....flat spot at street speed and at 60mph!!   Help!!! :aussie: :working:

Ok!!  I found that it is a 1411 - 750cfm......!!!!!   Are these carbies crap or what???...I have read some nightmare experiences all over the place!!!  The stumbling and cut outs are rife!!  Am I to believe all that I read?? Or are there inherent problems with this carb???  Any input would be gratefully received !!

My car is running a 1405 Manual Choke 4 bbl edelbrock carb and it will be the last edelbrock carb I own. I'm always tinkering with it it never stays consistent. I had a holley on a previous car and it was awesome in comparison.

I had the same carb on my 440 and it started faster than my fuel injected Challenger.  Idled smooth.  But I did have some stumbles while driving and a huge flat spot.  They make a calibration kit (Part# 1489)  http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/carbs_acc/access_calibrate.shtml. It has the parts you can mix and match to make the carb a little richer or leaner in the off-idle and WOT portions of operation.  I spend about a day using the kit and following the instructions in the owners manual and my car ran fine.  Not maximum performance but I had no problems driving around town or on the highway.  Edelbrock isn't regarded highly by those seeking every last horsepower, but for a driver it's a great carb once set up for your car.

As far as the high idle and stalling when in gear, check for vacuum leaks.  Get a can of carb cleaner and spray the base of the carb, shaft, hoses etc. if the car stumbles, there is your leak.  Make sure the front big port is connected to your PCV, the rear big port (if you have one) is your vacuum for brakes.  Not necessary if you have intake vacuum.  the small port on the passenger side is for your vac advance distributor.  The drivers side port should be plugged.  hope this helps!

Thamks guys, I found that the PCV has been plugged into the rear vac port, can that cause problems???  Also the electric choke postive wired to the coil +.  I'll check for leaks and see what I find.

Edelbrock carbs work great for me. I have 1 and I put 2 on two other cars. Set them once and never touched them again. Sound like you have other problems. Choke wire on the coil is a no no.

Thanks again.....I looked at the vac advance and found it faulty..capped it and she just runs smooth as!!!  Changed the PCV to the front port......big improvements all round.....runs a treat.....got to just give it an all round tune as the dude that owned it before me re built the engine and just used all the old parts...and now they are just failing in a domino effect situation.  Just gotta replace the old stuff and see what happens

 :2thumbs: Glad my suggestions helped!  The PCV on the rear port is a giant vacuum leak and definitely caused a bunch of your problems.  You should find it runs a lot better now.  If you don't have one, Edelbrock has the owners manuals online you can download.  They really helped me understand how the thing works.  Happy driving!

As I understand it, the PCV hose goes on the front large port in the middle.  The vacuum advance goes on the small one to the left of that looking from the front!!
I reconnected the old vac hose from the A/C unit to the manifold vac and all the flaps responded...however, I suspect that there may be some perished hoses under the dash that may be leaking. I will take a look at that tonight and see if it runs any different with it closed off!!
