1971 barracuda front disc brake bearing preload
« on: April 10, 2013 - 09:08:34 PM »
hey guys

what r u guys doing 4 stock style 1 piece front disc brake rotors bearing preload?the tighten and feel method or something a little more precise..

im going from memory but i think they want 65 inch lbs? tighten it to that number and back off just enough to insert the cotter pin.

reason 4 asking is i set the front up that way but no matter how much i bleed the front brakes the passenger is just abit tighter than the drivers side front..everything new including the rotors which have been trued on the brake lath..new rotors were eggshaped  :((((i paid how much for this?????runout is at 2+ thousants..

The way we used to do it was using a channel lock, gently gripping the nut, spin the rotor and pre load the bearing backing it off once and re tighten as your spinning the rotor.

Back off once during your rotor turning and just barely tighten it by feel.
I never had a bearing turn brown or scar that way. 50K miles easily with little or no wear.

thanks for the response.

chiltons says 8 ftlbs which equals 96 inch lbs preload...my mistake..at 65,,i know the procedure at tight less something but with disc it seems a little more unforgiving..because of the calipers..and disc rotor runout....makes a diff in itself..
