Hey ya'll
         So i got this 73 Challenger that i been working on for the last 3 years first it was the idle: fixed then then overheating: fixed wiring: fixed  ... ect but there has been a problem with that magical thing that bolts to the back of the engine the 904 tf. At first it would not shift in to 3rd figuring the trans was a total loss and planing to buy a new one i tabooed and disassembled it. To my suprise the trans foward cluch band was shot and with futher investigation there was a piece missing all together the thing that extende the accumulator actuating arm (sorry dont quite know what it is called so managed to get the part and i reassembeld the trans and reinstalled but to my dismay thinking i was finaly going to cruise the roads shift, shift, shift, and the trans goes back to first unless im gunning the hell out of her. Way i figure its a pressure loss on the discharge side or there might be an air bubble in the accumulators. HELP ME FOR THE LOVE OF THE MOPAR GODS HELP!! So there are 3 options i can go with, 1) buy a new one. 2) attempt to rebuild with an overhaule kit or 3a) get 904 tf from junk yard or manual trans from a copatable vehical the junk yard one is throughing me off tho cus i cant find any thing that has like a compatapillity thing like the 904 tf can be found in... thank you all for reading and hope to go cruising with ya some time

Never had a 904 but the 727 requires the kickdown or you wreck the tranny quickly, and it's shifts erratic.

Sounds like the governor valve is stuck, which is why it will shift out of first gear when you gun it. The governor valve is on the output shaft of the trans, you'll have to pull the tail shaft housing to get to it. If the Throttle pressure valve (Kickdown) was misadjusted, it would rapidly upshift to 3rd gear, unless held in gear manually. For the most part, a 727 and a 904 are almost twins. Once the TS housing is off, you will see the gear that drives the speedo-cable, and what looks like a set of boxy ears. On those ears there are 2 weighted flaps w/ light springs. As the output shaft spins centripetal force pulls them open increasing the pressure from the trans pump on the governor circuit, this will continue until the pressure is higher than the throttle (kickdown) side. At which point, the transmission will upshift into the next appropriate gear. No matter what it sounds like the problem is in the governor circuitry of it. Also, I have a 904 trans, from a Challenger that has been stored indoors, with the kickdown levers and such attached, if you want I will rebuild it, and sell it to you for a very fair price; or I can sell it as is.

Thanks for offering the rebuilt trans but I'm all the way in hawaii and I just found out I'm rejoining my sub in the next few days so the cars gunna sit for a bit but that's cool if you stilll have the trans and still willing to sell I will definatly hit you up on the offer when I get back
