What can you tell about this Challenger?
« on: April 02, 2013 - 10:40:31 AM »
Hi guys, I saw this picture posted on Google+ on an old Trans Am Series page.

That's Sam Posey in the pic.

Look at the Challenger in the foreground.  You can see that it does not have the R/T designation on the front fenders but it has black paint on the cowl area.  It's not a T/A car.  It does look like it has a V8.

Does this black paint mean anything?  Which cars got the black paint in the cowl area?  Was this a flat hood or Rallye hood car?  :clueless:  Thanks!

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I've seen this pic and more from a vintage scca fb page,  that hoodless challenger is a strip for parts car donated by dodge.

Impact color cars had the black so the color would not be seen through the hood vents .
 looks like a 340 non a/c 22" rad car

Not all cars got the blackout though. It was hit and miss. My FM3 car did not.

Nothing is in stone with these cars if you say it was not available you will find one built with it anyway . Unless it simply did not fit like AC with a shaker hood almost anything was possible . Maybe early cars missed the blackout , who knows what guidelines were followed .
