Pretty cool pro-touring '70 Charger
« on: April 12, 2013 - 03:32:32 PM »
http://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?86533-1970-Charger-Pro-Tour-Build-aka-quot-Punishment-quot/page5&highlight=mopar+irs

Not a real fan of a 1970 (prefer they do this to a '69), but still kinda cool.

Few nits:

No glovebox?

Don't care for the exposed inner fenders.  Guess they don't drive this on the road.

Needs a cover in the engine compartment to cover the area for the condenser, radiator area.

Color is kind of boring.  I know it's supposed to be stealthy, mad max, but that grey is just so...boring.

Engine...absolutely zero appeal.  Put a supercharger on it, hilborn injectors...at least some cool valve covers and drive pulleys!

Gauge cluster.  I like it being in a pod, but those gauges still look so aftermarket.  I would maybe have stuck in a cluster from Dakota Digital.

E.g.:

However, love the Challenger taillights, door panels, and modern trim-less windshields/back glass.

I'm not a big fan of '70 Charger grills either. Nor the blacked out wheels..on anything, ever. The whole black wheel fad leaves me unimpressed.

The inner fenders have lexan panels in them. That is why there are all the little screws around them. Presumably to show off the suspension.

IMO, it is a very nice car, I'd be happy to own it, but I wouldn't pay to build it that way either. IMO, this is where a lot of PT guys change all sorts of stuff up for the sake of "newness" and you don't necesasarily improve the breed much beyond what careful selection of key parts would achieve. I have run into that discussion with any number of more Cheverolet oriented PT builders who 's first thought is dump all the stock stuff, and then see them wondering who is the DSE equivilent for the mopar world. Then they get pissed because there are only a half dozen choices and half of those are stock based.

As far as the whole PT thing, I prefer only a few cosmetic mods.  E.g.:

EXTERIOR:
Shaved door handles on b-bodies/a-bodies
tucked in bumpers and shaved bumper bolts
Wheels/tires (18" max)

INTERIOR:
New front Recaro-type seats, but with the OEM pattern
3-point seatbelts on hardtops
Steering wheel (something that could look OEM, like a leather TUFF)
Tilt column
OEM gauges, but maybe with a modern/diff silkscreen to them

I hate Autometers, non-OEM consoles for the most part

ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
cleaned up of wiring
cleaned up (but not flat) firewall
battery re-located
Fuel injection, turbos, superchargers.
Crossflow radiator, hydroboost PBs
SLick pulleys/brackets

SUSPENSION:
all changed up of course.  WHatever you want.  R&P front end, four-link or IRS in the rear.

PAINT:
OEM-looking color, but with a bit more pop?
Factory-looking stripes

Pro-touring can be done very tastefully, but can't be overdone.  Otherwise it will age quickly.  10-15 years from now, people will be going "Man, that is so 2009!"
