Transgo Video
« on: December 02, 2009 - 09:21:41 AM »
Here is a video from Transgo that covers VB removal and shift kit install. It is an old video, combines 3 spd with 4 spd and leaves out a few things but it is still worth watching. You need to open it with Quick Time player or the latest version of Windows Media Player. It takes about 20 minutes to down load before you can play it.

I bought the transgo tf2 for my 73 904 non lockup. On page 3 of the instructions they talk about lock up mods and the next step is to drill 7/16 into the channel where the check ball is suppose to be left out. Do I do this step on my trans or is that for lock up only? Any help is appreciated

Yes, drill it. That is for 1-2 shift firmness ( firmer due to more flow)

Ok so now it's all back together and when it's in drive I don't notice a difference! And if I put it in 1st and floor it it won't shift to 2nd until you let off or way past what I feel comfortable shifting at. If I give it moderate throttle and manually shift to 2nd it seems to stumble like it doesn't want to shift

Did you fill it in neutral.

Yes filled and checked in neutral. When I say stumbles it shakes the car engaging second manually from 1st. It engages fine from drive though

Ok so I pulled the valve body cleaned and double checked everything, I enlarged the hole for the 2nd shift this time and I adjusted the front and rear band exactly as the directions advised and I left out the accumulator spring this time. It no longer has the shutter going into 2nd now. But if I go wot and shift to 2nd it still runs all the way past redline before it shifts. I don't like shifting to 2nd at wot and it not engaging until it wants to.

So I started playing with the kickdown linkage. I backed it off so the linkage at the trans is not all the way back at full throttle and that helped the shift point come down.
Questions now
Will it hurt anything not having that pushed all the way back at full throttle?
And
If I start in manual low and floor it I can shift to 2nd and it still runs in 1st until high in the rpms not much "driver control" if you ask me, is this normal? I want to control my shift when I'm at wot and right now I can't!

The trans is going to shift where it wants to no matter how early you manually shift it into a higher gear.  The TF2 makes a lot of pressure.  At WOT, it is going to be high in the RPM range before the governor can overcome that much pressure. I had a 904 with the TF2. The 1-2 and the 2-3 shifts at WOT were at 6100rpm.

I'm no trans expert but I think you need to rework your governor for lower shift points...or somehow change a spring in the valve body so you aren't making as much pressure.  You could always go to a manual valve body. That's the only way you will get a shift exactly when you move the shifter to a higher gear.

I can manually shift 1-2 at any other throttle position besides wot, why would I lose that ability at wot?

The line pressure and governor control the shift points...not the manual valve.(what the shift linkage is connected to) At part throttle the trans wants to shift at a lower rpm but you are manually holding it in the lower gear. As soon as you move the lever to a higher gear, the trans shifts. At WOT, the line pressure is so high that the governor can't overcome it until high in the rpm band.  The only way the shifter will control the shift(no matter what the throttle possition and rpm)is with a manual valve body.
