Whats this 440 worth??
« on: May 16, 2013 - 08:28:00 PM »
Im looking at buying a 440 for my 70 challenger. I found a local guy that has one its a 66 block with forged crank, hemi rods, I think he said 904 heads?? What is it worth he is asking $1000 or best.
Any information would be helpful

In my opinion that's pretty steep unless it's a #s block you need. Or if it runs great and doesn't leak at all. I routinely
see 440's in decent shape but assume need a rebuild for 500 and under.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

High side , can he produce receipts showing a fresh rebuild , hemi rods alone are worth a lot if they really are Hemi rods . Not a fan of the 906 heads , they are the first series of open chamber emissions heads . Could well be worth the $$ a fresh machined 440 wil run over $3000 fast .

No receipts. he said its sitting in the corner and it use to be in his dart that he sold a few years back. Im going to go look at it maybe offer him $600 cash. or $750 tops. what should i look for as far as number on the block, heads, rods, crank, etc.. What are a good set of heads.

Would be a decent deal if you could start it and listen to it run.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

is it assembled ? not much to see , date code on the block 66 was the first year for the 440 ,
rods are easy 440 rods have a 9/16 nut , hemi are 5/8 , , I like the closed chamber heads 915 casting
