Bucket Seat - New Cover - Are these Wrinkles Permanent
« on: September 26, 2013 - 08:31:35 PM »
First cover job.  1970 driver's seat.  I used Legendary covers and was pleased.  I reused the original foam, which was OK but probably somewhat compressed after 44 years, so there are a few wrinkles.  As the seat settles, will they smooth out any?

The worst section is upper side area, on the right in the photo.

In my opinion...I would say unfortunately not...I don't think the cover was "pulled" tight enough :2cents: :aussie:

I just put these Legendary covers on last week.  You need to pull that area tighter. You can take out some wrinkles with heat (sit them in the sun) But, I think the ones you have need to be pulled tighter before you try that. I still have to heat these up to finish them off.

yup......heat, heat, heat.....i always wondered why the old guy around here at a interior shop had his stuff laying outside in the sun prior to putting in on. I did my first job years back and made the same mistake, but can be pulled tighter once pliable.

So I should pull the hog rings out and try again?  If I recall correctly, and I may be wrong, it seems like the rings on the old seats were in holes on the frame, with no way to stretch any tighter on the sides because of nowhere else to clamp the rings.  I reckon I can take the back off and take another shot at it.  I have plenty of rings and don't want a half done job.  The passenger seat looks better, and I did it first.  I really thought the issue was worn seat foam, not stretching.  Maybe I will heat
it with a hair dryer.  I used the clothes dryer to warm the but they cooled instantly during stretching.

Hey we have 3 days of sunshine coming.  Maybe I can soften them up.

Actually, the upholstery shops use a steam stick. It freshens up the foam to original uncompressed size. I've seen
it used on a few sets of seats and it makes them look great.
If I cant fix it, it's broke
