quick swapmeet question.
« on: May 28, 2013 - 11:39:46 PM »
This past Saturday me and the old man were selling a few parts. We had a 489 chunk with a open 3.23 gear set and couldn't sell it for $100. The only thing anybody wanted to know was if it had a sure grip. My question is why would you want to pay a premium for a probably 40 year old sure grip instead of buying my factory gears and adding a new auburn or whatever diff you wanted?

Because most people don't care if it works good as long as it's cheep. It will prob. cost 5-6 hundred once you buy the gears and posi unit and then have it set up..

If they didn't know it was a sure grip by looking at it, they wouldn't likely see the potential. Or, it could be they read one of the recent articles and are looking for sure grip guts to put in another chunk with the beefier pinion gear (742?). Hard to say.

My guess is your gears are also 40 years old. If I'm going to invest in a new sure grip unit, I'm also going to invest in a new set of gears. To me, buying used gears is like buying a new camshaft. It's a crap shoot and the price usually reflects that.

They wanted to know if it had a sure grip so they could flip it for more than you were asking on ebay

Not really a big market for open 3:23's....I agree, buying used gears can be a real crap shoot....

Last weekend I was selling at a local swap meet....I had a couple of alternators for $5 each...people wanted to know if they were in good working condition....One guy wanted to know if I would actually guarantee that they work.... :screwy:
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Im beginning to think its not worth it to drag all the heavy crap out there. Nobody was selling very much and there wasn't alot of sellers.

It`s only a couple hundred for new gears so most people look for the sure grip units.I bought mine used and after 15+ years of street and drag race abuse it`s just now worn out so I did pretty good.
