Ignition switch wiring
« on: May 21, 2013 - 11:46:47 PM »
Hey there,

I am in the process of replacing the dash harness on a 1973 Challenger and figured I might as well replace the ignition switch and turn signal switch while I'm in the process (lot of charred connectors throughout).  I've been doing most of this stuff with a little (make that a lotta) help from this forum.  Ran into a problem this evening with the ignition switch.  In the new switch, I have a separate red and black wire that are coming out of the ignition switch itself versus coming from the connector as it was set up in the burned out unit I am replacing (see the terribly blurry wires in the forefront of pic #1).
I am making a newb assumption that these are the wires that should go in the spot on the right hand side of pic #2 (2 red wires going into a white connector).

First how far off am I from reality?  Second, if I am correct do the red and black wires from pic one simply go into the two holes behind the screwed in white connector with the 2 red wires from pic #2?  I should have taken a picture when I had the small connector out, but if none of this makes sense I can do that in the morning. Thanks in advance for any insight, I'm just picking this stuff up as I go along. Cheers.

Alex

all right, if the white connector in pic #2 is the key buzzer and i can simply romove that from the old connecter and install in the new connector that will be taken care of.  Question remains, where do the black and red wires at the top of this pic go?

Any help would be appreciated.

Alex

they should be in the white 7 pin gang plug , you should be able to match up the colors in the old plug positions or the main harness the withe plug plugs into , the 2 red wires are just the key in ign buzzer ,

Perfect. I'll run the black thru the #2 spot (next to yellow) and the red thru #5 (next to brown).  I think that's the right positioning based on the schematics I have.  Thanks again Chryco.

Do you see the small gauge black wire that goes into the connector?  That shouldn't be there.  My original switch didn't have that wire.  The connector had an empty slot there.  On the main dash harness side, there are battery + wires there.  If that black wire is left in the plug, bad things will happen.  Pull it out and tape it up.

If someone else sees it different please let me know.  This is how I have mine.

You are correct...the other harness is for the key buzzer.  Just pull the wires out of the old connector and put them in the new one.

Will do Chryco.

burdar, thanks for the heads up.  I noticed that wasn't in my original either, but all of the old wiring in mine was a mess.  Much of it didn't make sense at all and those parts that did were a hack job.  Thank you guys for the info.

Looks like the radio harness that goes to the rear speaker fader knob for a stereo (5 speaker 3 in dash, 2 rear) car.

The E body knob/pots are different but here's a polara/fury one.  Note the connector

Good deal JamieZ, that's what I was hoping. The guy before me did a bunch of stereo work and has the back speakers routed differently.  Should be able to get things moving without any further changes to the wiring. Got the old beast started for a second earlier,  but now it doesn't seem to be getting any gas. All the electric I replaced seems to be working fine. Car cranks, but I can't get it to turn over again. I'll mess with it some more tomorrow and see if I can't come up with a solution.  Thanks again.

The correct rear speaker knob is not easy to find.  There are not reproduced as far as I know and the 5 speaker setup wasn't common.  The B body version looks similar but it will not fit correctly in the e body dash.  The shaft is too short I believe.
