Did Plymouth use primer?
« on: June 22, 2013 - 11:39:33 PM »
I'm scraping my floors on my 71 cuda, the car has original floors and was painted green, but I scrapped alittle original paint off and the backside of the green is yellow? Did Plymouth use yellow primer?

Sounds like zinc chromate primer. Good stuff, but I'm not sure if it was used on on your Cuda.  :clueless: Hopefully someone that knows more about this stuff will chime in...

My understanding is that they used some sort of primer on the whole car, inside and out. That's why when you look at the underside of an original car, or 300 point restoration,  there is over-spray of the body color on the primed underside.  But I'm not positive, just my observations after reading hundreds of posts on CC.com.
1970 Plymouth 'Cuda.  Matching numbers 440 U Code, 4 speed pistol grip, Rallye dash, AM 8 Track, Shaker hood, 15 inch rallye wheels, Dana 60 4.10, Super Track Pak.  One of 134 - 440 "U" coupes codes built in 1970 and one of 100 - 440 Super Track Paks built in 1970.

Whatever they put in the paint and primer back then was hard as a rock.

I'm sure they grey primer dipped all the cars up past the rear deck, but left the top out for less bubbles in the process. The inside of the frames on both 1968 and 1974 are still primed and rust free on mine.  The car should never be driven on salted roads, so I moved west.  :bigshades: The 68 was driven only in the Bay Area, to the refinery in Richmond, from near by, and to Raider games in Oakland.

Green must not be your original color.

What's your fender tag say?

They did use a dip primer.  There is a great reference chart of how the cars went through the cycle somewhere on here.
I've been looking but can't find it.

Car was a triple green car. Tag matches everything. I have only found a few little chips on the backside of the green paint. There was pieces of original carpet still. Positive this car was green. Only found it on a few spots on the floor , no where else
