68 Fastback Project car
« on: June 06, 2018 - 08:19:06 PM »
I just obtained this car today. It is a 318 (first year), AT on the floor with console, car.  Like many cars of the era, this one has had its share of modification over the years not the least of which is that fly sun roof. There are also 67/68 Mustang side louvers installed which I have to admit I am kind of liking. It appears to be an original creme (sunflower) exterior with a white interior and I am sure was very striking when new.

It appears to have a 318 still in it but I do not think it is original, looks to be out of something newer. The engine turns so I have that going for me, the trans has fluid which is amazingly clean. Of course there is rust in all the usual spots (trunk, rear quarters, etc.) but overall it isnt horrible. I haven't decided what to do with it if anything, it kind of depends on whether or not it runs. I would love to dump a 5.7 in it but I still have 2 other projects.

I thought I would throw it on here for discussion sake.

Looks like you've got your self a real project there Mike, but I like those cars and also kinda wanted one. So many projects and so little time, eh?

Yeah you can say that (that its a project). Just got it off loaded into the shop and took all the crap out of the inside, well most of it  The passenger door is stuck shut so I soaked the latch with PB blaster, so we will see what happens there. All in all, it isnt super bad, if it weren't for that stupid sun roof I'd be much happier. Seems like all of the front piece or most of them are there, there is a pile of stainless but I am not sure if it is all there. The buckets are trashed as are the door panels. All of the glass is good except the sun roof so there is that.

It would make either a good project or a good parts car, its kind of right in the middle leaning perhaps more toward the project side depending on how you look at it.

Cool car there, I vote for project car, I also vote to remove the sun roof.

Saw A 68 in the same colour with a Mod Top when I was on holiday March this year. Early barracuda style growing on me.

Thanks for the feedback, maybe I should have set up a vote on it.

I agree on both count, for me though I already have 2 projects; my 73 Cuda and a 70 Roadrunner in the wings. So this means that in reference to this car I;

A. put the car back into a storage situation and hopefully get to it some day
B. sell it off to someone wanting a project
C. apply the minimum time needed to get it relatively road worthy (think rat rod in that the body would only receive what was absolutely necessary)
D. move it up in line, meaning do this one before the Roadrunner, after my 73 Cuda

If I do keep it, I will either EFI it using the 318 or find a 5.7 setup for it.

Hey why not have another project. That gets you up to 3 like my situation.

If not kept as a project. I agree to apply a few resources getting it at minimum a driver.

Good luck on the plans
Mike
