6 Pack Problems
« on: June 24, 2013 - 01:27:02 PM »
I'm tuning my 6 pack setup and after doing the necessary tuning my car stalls when I put it into any gear.
I had  metering jets 64 in the center carb it did it, but with the idle curb set higher it would run. I decided to change the metering jets to  63 (thinking that it was getting to much fuel).
After installing the 63's it got worse (trying to out it into gear).
I think that maybe I should had gone the other direction and put the metering jets 65 instead of the 63's.
My outboard jets are 80 at the diaphragm and 82 at the throttle.

I'm assuming the center carb is "lean".
I have good vacuum , I've tuned the outboards enough to get a good Idle and a vacuum, along with the timing set at 900 and the timing at 14 btdc

I do not have the manifold heat blocked.
What's your thoughts?

How much vacum are you getting , what is the power valve rated at , if the engine vacuum drop below the powervalve rating in gear the PV will open & flood the engine so if you need to be 2" or so bleow the vacuum reading minimum , if you have 12" of vacuum a 6.5 is fine but if you have 7" of vacuum it will not work , I would block the heat crossover but it can cause problems with the choke / cold starts , but will run better otherwise

Thanks for that. I'll get the vacuum reading and how would I determine the power valve rating.

the powervalve has a number stamped on the face or side 6.5 is typical = 6.5" is the opening value so when the engine vacuum drops below 6.5 it opens adding more fuel

I recommend the PROMAX rear base plate for easy adjustability.
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

I have a strong vaccumn of 14 and my power valve is 6.5. I spent time on Youtube and found this Video
How To Adjust The Accelerator Pump On Holley Carburetors

After making the adjustment as described in the video my stall problem is gone. It seams that the accelerator pump had been adjusted.
Now that I have the stall corrected, should I go back and re-install the #64 metering jets on the center carb (I changed them the other day to #63)
I have a 440 with an automatic.
And I do have the Promax base plates which makes adjusting the outboard carbs so much easier.

I actually have a carb tuning guide in the archives as well you can work through step by step
gkad you located the problems , tough to tell over the internet but every adjustment counts & it has to be done in the right order so as not to affect other adjustments
