ballast resistor
« on: June 12, 2013 - 03:54:55 PM »
What is the difference between a 2 prong and a 4 prong?  I am going to replace it for trouble shooting purposes and see I can get a 4 prong one like the car used to have from the local parts store.  The crate motor came with a 2 prong one so I am using that right now.

Thanks.

Are you using a 4 pin or a 5 pin ECU?  The four terminal ballast is used with the 5 pin ECU.  You can use the four terminal ballast with a 4 pin ECU but not the other way around.

I'm not sure it's the orange control box.

That would be a 4 pin.  Pull the connector off and count the contacts.  You only need the two prong ballast.  The orange boxes have been failing a lot recently.  I wouldn't put one on my car.  You're just asking for trouble.

They changed venders and the quality has gone way down.

Too my foggy recollection,
A 4 prong allows you to start on 12 volts (more fire).
Then switches over to 10 volts in order not to burn the points as often or as hard.

both do that , they drop voltage to the coil once it is running , the 4 pin uses one side for the coil & the other side for the ECU , if you have a 4 pin ECU the resistor is inside the unit so ti only requires a 2 pin ballast

New to the forum (but a long time Challenger's owner).

Just recently I have been having issues with the ECU, Ballast etc. I found a 5 pin EUC laying around and replaced my orange box with it. The Challenger started great! I saw that the 5 pin came with a 4 prong ballast. I didn't give it much thought until now. I'm still using the 2 prong ballast (only 2 days).

What would be a good replacement for the Orange Box?
