    Best Trans For o.d.

    I've gotten a lot of insights reading posts on the subject of overdrive options. I understand how expensive aftermarket trannys can cost. Are there ANY bolt on options that work? I read about a GM trans but don't know which one. Would a Ram trans work? :clueless:

    Smal block or big block ? :dunno:
     the Only bolt on big block one is the Gear Vendors Unit , it replaces the tailshft on either the 727, 904 auto or 4 spd & only requires some minor floor massaging to fit
     The 518 is the next easiest , it will bolt to a small block but require floor surgery to fit inside the tunnel .
      The RFE 545 should bolt up as well but is much bigger in the tunnel .
     The Viper T56 can be bolted in as well with a special belhousing & major floor surgery .
     As for the GM options I have no clue , obviously you need a different belhousing or adapter plate to bolt them up , not sure how the Flex plate to converter works or how they deal with the starter

    I have Keislers kit with a GM  4L60 You could piece it all together with aftermarket suppliers. Requires no cutting.

    I know that you can fit an Ultra Bell to the 518 to fit a BB, just wanted to see other options. Supposedly no floor surgery
    is needed to fit the 518 in there. If I can find a core for cheap enough I may try it.

    As Brad said you can do the GM 4L60 swap without using keisler .

    a518s require NO floor surgery. You have to trim a couple of unused bosses and a cooling fin of some kind on the tailshaft. 5 minutes with a sawsall. If you go a518, you need a pre 1996 model as later ones are computer controlled. There are plenty of good threads here detailing the swap. I was able to put mine in the car for less than a third of the price of the keisler automatic kit

    Here is the write-up I did on the 518 swap.  Works great.  No cutting the car at all.   EASY modification needed to the tranny case.
