1970 Challenger 5spd conversion?
« on: June 29, 2013 - 12:06:47 AM »
I'd like to convert my 1970 Challenger over to a 5 speed. this winter. The car is a N code RT/SE but now has a 440+6 with a B/M 727TF and a Moser Dana with 3.73 ratio and 27 inch tall tires. The Keisler kit seems like a good setup, BUT reading some of the posts about there service has me a little gun shy. I'm from Northeast Pa. and only live about an hour away from Passion so I could deal with them face to face, But checking there website there's no date on the release of the 855 trans let alone a complete auto to manual conversion kit. Any info would be helpful.

seriously the best manual trans 5 spd will be the Passon , Tremec is problematic , my next choice would be a Viper T56 Magnum but you will have to rework the floor to fit it .
Passon is great to deal with & can supply a complete kit .
Brewers can also supply everything except the 855 trans & is great to deal with also .
STAY AWAY from Keisler , seriously !!
Welcome BTW , What color is the R/T SE ?

It's plum crazy and fc7 on the tag. All original sheet metal calf. car. It's missing the SE chrome around the tops of the doors, qtr windows, hood, rockers and front and rear valance's. Other then the missing chrome it's all there. Odd thing is power bulge hood but no hood pins. I guess I'll have to run up or give Passion a call and see what they can do for me.

Talked to Passon last December about converting my 74 to the 855. Super cool guy.  He sent me a quote for everything.  Cost may change since its been a while,  and he may be having more things going on that will change it.  This is just to give you an idea of what he gave me.

Yes, I know. You can say we told you so now. My experience with Keisler has been the same as all of yours. Anyone considering buying something from Keisler Engineering should check their BBB rateling.  It's an "F".  I think that says it all. Here is the link

Good lord that is a lot of money.  So much so that it would make me think twice about doing it.  Now where can we cut costs.....I'm going to work on this.

True it is a lot of money but for people that dont want to cut up the cars would probably be willing to pay it. I know I will when the time comes. I want an od for sure. So either convert one for 2500 or get a new trans for 4500 not to bad

Now correct me if I'm wrong here.  Jamie is designing this to fir the existing mopar bell housings.  In this quotation, you have 299.00 for a reconditioned small block bell housing.  These can be had for $50.00 everywhere - buy one clean it up, run a tap through the threads...etc.  Done.  The inspection covers are normally rusted and long gone - so lets use the one from the Dodge Dakota.  OEM part that is $25.00 out the door that was the same for the V6 and V8 versions.  Pedals - why purchase reconditioned when they are re-popped by P&G Classic for under $180.00.  A person could get this down to under $6 grand for an auto to manual swap.
